FFUK Chilli-Eating Contest

Sep 19 2011

Fiery Foods’ Chilli Festival took place this weekend in Victoria Gardens in Brighton. Back for a 4th year, it proved to be bigger and better than ever, with new exhibitors, live music, cookery demos, lots of chilli plant, fruit and product competitions, not to mention the infamous Chilli-Eating Contest which is held over both days. Not one to be taken too lightly, now I’ve witnessed it. You have to reserve your place at the table well ahead of the weekend because there’s a limit of 15. Of course not everyone who signs up online actually dares to show up. It […]

World Eel Throwing Competition

Who’d have thought a whole day could be spent celebrating eels, well in Ely that’s exactly what they do on their annual Eel Day, which took place on Saturday. The day kicks off with a procession from the cathedral, along part of the city’s Eel Heritage Trail Walk and down to the Waterside, where a whole host of eel related activities are held, including, most importantly, the World Eel Throwing Competition. Now, don’t go throwing your hands up in horror, real eels are in no way harmed during this event, they’ve been replaced with very realistic stunt double stuffed toys. […]

Post's featued image.

Along with hundreds of paper plates containing a sloppy custard, A Brit Different was officially launched at the World Custard Pie Championship in Coxheath, near Maidstone on Saturday. The highly trained athletes who came together to form the team ‘A Brit Different’, from a variety of sporting disciplines, made an impressive attempt to win the title, but probably came closer to winning the wooden spoon, had there been one. The cream of the British Isles fought it out for air guitar supremacy on Friday night at the O2 Acadamy in front of a huge crowd and an esteemed judging panel of two-times UK winner Gabi Matzeu (aka The Hoxton Creeper), two-times World Champion and UK founder Zac Monro, and John Georgie who founded Air Guitar Scotland. Now in its fourth year, the electrifying contest, which is open to all and hotly contested, is a real test of skill and allows ordinary people a real taste of rock stardom. The winner, not only receives a beautiful brand new Gibson air […]

Braughing Wheelbarrow Race

Jul 20 2009

Heavy rain wasn’t to put off hundreds of spectators who lined the street on Friday evening to cheer on competitors taking part in Braughing Village’s annual Wheelbarrow Race. The rain was actually far less of a threat than I’d imagined, as everyone comes prepared for the kids, who see to it that everyone gets soaked whatever the weather. Whilst eggs and flour bombs were banned from the race, water bombs and pistols were actually on sale, and with the races focused around a ford there was no shortage of ammunition. Young and old(er) took part in three races of varying […]

About this blog

The vast majority of posts in this blog are about quirky & eccentric competitions & festivals. I started it in 2006 in France with a competition I’ll never forget. Where contestants battle it out to become the World Champion Pig Squeeler, or ‘Cri du Cochon’. I had little knowledge back then of quite how far my pursuit of these kind of events would lead me. I’ve travelled all over Britain (and occasionally further afield) to capture our curiosities and quirks. There’s nothing uniquely eccentric about the British, you’ll find people all over the world up to all sorts of weird and wonderful activities, but we do have a remarkable capacity to embrace the madness. ‘A Brit Different’ is the book that was born from it, my labour of love! So what next? There’s always something interesting going on, so watch this space, only time will tell!
