Lewes Bonfire Celebrations

Great to see that Borough Bonfire Society have gone to new heights in creating the largest Guy Fawkes effigy in the world at just under 18 meters, 58 foot high. One for the Guinness Book of Records I’m sure. Stuffed full of fireworks it will be set alight with an almighty bang this evening during the world renowned festival. I hope the wind and rain doesn’t dampen any spirits!
This nursery rhyme which accompanies the celebration of Bonfire Night is as integral to the custom, as the burning of the Guy and the lighting of fireworks:
RemEMBER remEMBER the fifth of November
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes, guy, t’was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England’s overthrow.
By god’s mercy he was catch’d
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.
And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!
