World Eel Throwing Competition

May 05 2011

Who’d have thought a whole day could be spent celebrating eels, well in Ely that’s exactly what they do on their annual Eel Day, which took place on Saturday. The day kicks off with a procession from the cathedral, along part of the city’s Eel Heritage Trail Walk and down to the Waterside, where a whole host of eel related activities are held, including, most importantly, the World Eel Throwing Competition. Now, don’t go throwing your hands up in horror, real eels are in no way harmed during this event, they’ve been replaced with very realistic stunt double stuffed toys. […]

World Pea Throwing Championships

Oct 11 2010

It was postponed for a week due to the lovely British Summer, but happily the sun shone yesterday for the 12th annual World Pea Throwing Championships, held at the Lewes Arms pub in Lewes. About 40 competitors entered into three categories, for the mens, ladies and children’s titles, each with 3 attempts. Practically impossible to see where the pea first lands, the distance recorded is to where the perfectly intact vegetable finally rests. Pea spotters hunt it out amongst the debris of the defrosted squashed peas that have gone before. Some are never found, thought to have landed on the […]

Post's featued image.

Along with hundreds of paper plates containing a sloppy custard, A Brit Different was officially launched at the World Custard Pie Championship in Coxheath, near Maidstone on Saturday. The highly trained athletes who came together to form the team ‘A Brit Different’, from a variety of sporting disciplines, made an impressive attempt to win the title, but probably came closer to winning the wooden spoon, had there been one. The World Custard Pie Championship

I wonder if throwing 2 pies in one go may be cheating? It was the only time I saw that tactic being adopted, but it didn’t matter much as team ‘Pie Noon’ were knocked out at Semi-final stage of The World Custard Pie Championship on Saturday. Sixteen teams from around Britain took part in the championship at Coxheath, near Maidstone. A local team called ‘Coxheath Till I Die’ flung their way to victory, to chants of “it’s coming home, it’s coming home…” in the year that not only the trophy, but the competition returned to it’s inaugural 1967 home. Rather […]

Egg-cited contestants from around the world dropped in to compete in the World Egg Throwing Championships, part of the Swaton Vintage Day, near Swaton, in Lincolnshire on Sunday. The championships are mere hatchlings in comparison to other egg-centric British events, at only 3 years old, but already draw a huge crowd, with contestants from as far a field as Holland, the USA, Swaton and Yorkshire TV, making it a truly international, and well documented event! The games consisted of 5 disciplines this year, ‘Throw & Catch’, ‘Static Relay’, ‘Target Throwing’, ‘Russian Egg Roulette’, and ‘Egg Trebuchet’. It was claimed that […]

UK Mobile Phone Throwing Championships

In a bid to beat the Finns at phone throwing, adventure sports club 8th Day has again hosted the UK Mobile Phone Throwing championship. Open to anyone over 18 living in the UK it was a great opportunity to chuck a clamshell or sling a slider far enough to get into the record books. The £5 entry fee gives you three attempts, with the phones being supplied for you. A new UK men’s record was set by Chris Hughff of 95.83m. It even beats the world record, set in Finland, where handsets were hauled 94.97m, but because the competition isn’t […]

About this blog

The vast majority of posts in this blog are about quirky & eccentric competitions & festivals. I started it in 2006 in France with a competition I’ll never forget. Where contestants battle it out to become the World Champion Pig Squeeler, or ‘Cri du Cochon’. I had little knowledge back then of quite how far my pursuit of these kind of events would lead me. I’ve travelled all over Britain (and occasionally further afield) to capture our curiosities and quirks. There’s nothing uniquely eccentric about the British, you’ll find people all over the world up to all sorts of weird and wonderful activities, but we do have a remarkable capacity to embrace the madness. ‘A Brit Different’ is the book that was born from it, my labour of love! So what next? There’s always something interesting going on, so watch this space, only time will tell!
