Winter Solstice at Stonehenge

Whilst most people were either tucked up in bed, or getting ready to hit the shops for their ‘last-chance-christmas-shopping’, a few hardy souls were out in the driving wind and rain to celebrate the winter solstice at Stonehenge in Wiltshire.

Taking place on the 21st Dec this year, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, is one of the most important on the calendar of the ancient stone circle, and a truly magical time to be there, as it draws together the country’s new age tribes with ordinary families, tourists, travelers and party people.

English Heritage said more than 3,500 people watched the sunrise at 08:04 GMT. There was certainly no sign of the sun this year, but the wet weather didn’t seem to dampen the celebration, as the sound of singing, drumming and chanting filled the air.
