Thistle hotel meets ‘A Brit Different’

Many a day spent photographing hotel rooms this summer. As well as taking straight interior shots I had a bit of fun coming up with different ideas for reportage shots, showing the room ‘in-use’. There was no budget for models or props, and time was seriously limited, but I’m very happy with how they all came out. Most of the time my assistant would stand in as the model as I was obviously taking the photos, but on a few occasions I’d set the camera up on self-timer and jump in myself. This was one such example, and what better […]

In a nod to the Olympics, but not wanting to follow the crowd, the lovely team at Country Living went searching for rural sporting stories that they could inform their readers about. I’m delighted to say they found just what they were looking for in the pages of “A Brit Different.” So, over the course of three months they are running three features, with extracts and pictures taken from the book on curious competitions in this great nation’s sporting calender. In addition, readers can order a copy of the book for the special price of £11.99 with free p&p until […]

This weekend saw the organisers of Brighton Bookstock kick it all off by attempting to break a world record, by creating the World’s Largest Book Pyramid. Unfortunately they didn’t manage it, the record stands at 1,500 books, and they only had 900. It was a great first attempt though, and everyone had a fun time in the process. Built in Add The Colour cafe on North Street on Saturday, the public brought in all their unwanted books, a dazzling selection, from old text books, fiction, non-fiction, some almost new and others with covers falling off, and pages cut out. They […]

Along with hundreds of paper plates containing a sloppy custard, A Brit Different was officially launched at the World Custard Pie Championship in Coxheath, near Maidstone on Saturday. The highly trained athletes who came together to form the team ‘A Brit Different’, from a variety of sporting disciplines, made an impressive attempt to win the title, but probably came closer to winning the wooden spoon, had there been one. To get your hands on a copy go to Amazon

About this blog

The vast majority of posts in this blog are about quirky & eccentric competitions & festivals. I started it in 2006 in France with a competition I’ll never forget. Where contestants battle it out to become the World Champion Pig Squeeler, or ‘Cri du Cochon’. I had little knowledge back then of quite how far my pursuit of these kind of events would lead me. I’ve travelled all over Britain (and occasionally further afield) to capture our curiosities and quirks. There’s nothing uniquely eccentric about the British, you’ll find people all over the world up to all sorts of weird and wonderful activities, but we do have a remarkable capacity to embrace the madness. ‘A Brit Different’ is the book that was born from it, my labour of love! So what next? There’s always something interesting going on, so watch this space, only time will tell!
